Frequently Asked Questions
Patio Covers Questions
How much is a custom patio cover?
Published national guides vary widely: Fixr puts covered patios at about $4,000 to $12,000 on average, or roughly $25 to $40 per square foot for most projects, while Thumbtack's install average runs $842 to $4,053 for simpler covers. Aluminum runs about $20 to $70 per square foot and wood about $15 to $35 per square foot in Fixr's figures. Size, roof type, fire zone requirements and footings drive the price, and your written estimate sets it.
Do you need a permit to build a patio cover in California?
In Santa Clarita, yes. The city's Building & Safety Division issues patio cover permits from its standard drawings or from full plans for custom designs, with inspections at the footings and at final (plus framing for roofed covers). Unincorporated areas such as Stevenson Ranch and Castaic go through Los Angeles County. We handle the permit as part of the job.
What is the difference between a patio cover and a gazebo?
A patio cover is usually attached to the house or set beside it to shade an existing patio, and it is open on the sides. A gazebo is a freestanding, roofed structure, often with its own floor, set out in the yard. Both are accessory structures, so setbacks and fire zone rules apply to either one.
Is a patio cover worth it?
In a valley where summer highs often pass 110 degrees, a cover can turn a patio that sits empty for months into usable space, and shading the back wall and windows can cut the heat entering the house. Whether it is worth it for you depends on how you use the yard, the direction the patio faces and your budget. We can show you options at several price points at the estimate.
What patio cover material is best for fire zones?
Los Angeles County's fire zone notes require patio covers near the house to be built with noncombustible or ignition-resistant materials, and they say paint or stain does not count as protection. Aluminum covers meet that easily. Wood can work when it is heavy timber or fire-retardant-treated lumber; we check what your parcel requires before you choose.
Will an aluminum patio cover stand up to Santa Ana winds?
A properly engineered aluminum cover with the right post spacing, footings and attachment handles normal wind loads. Failures on older covers usually come from undersized posts, rotted ledgers or loose fasteners rather than the roof panels. We size footings to the shaded area each post supports and fasten the cover to solid framing.
Do I need HOA approval for a patio cover?
If your home is in a homeowners association, almost certainly. In many Valencia villages, associations oversee the quality and upkeep of housing, and associations often set rules on height, color and materials. We provide drawings and material specs for your HOA submission, and we wait for approval before applying for the city permit.
Aluminum Patio Covers Questions
How much do aluminum patio covers cost?
Fixr's national figures put aluminum covers at about $20 to $70 per square foot and insulated panels at $26 to $59 per square foot. Bob Vila lists about $2,500 for a typical aluminum cover and about $5,000 for an insulated one. Your price depends on size, panel type and footings, and the written estimate sets it.
Is Alumawood real wood?
No. Alumawood is aluminum with an embossed woodgrain finish, made by Alumawood Outdoor Living. It looks like painted wood from a few feet away but does not rot, crack or need staining.
Do aluminum patio covers get hot?
A thin solid aluminum roof can radiate heat on the hottest afternoons. Insulated panels with a foam core keep the underside much cooler, and lattice tops let heat escape. For south- and west-facing patios we usually recommend insulated panels over the seating area.
Can an aluminum cover attach to my stucco wall?
Yes, either to the fascia under the roof edge or to a ledger bolted into the wall framing behind the stucco. The right method depends on roof height and the condition of the fascia, which we check at the estimate.
Are aluminum covers allowed in fire hazard zones?
Aluminum is noncombustible, which meets the ignition-resistance requirement Los Angeles County applies to patio covers near the house in fire hazard zones. Solid roofs on these structures may also need a Class A rating, which we confirm before ordering.
Wood Patio Covers Questions
How much do wood patio covers cost?
Fixr lists wood covers at about $15 to $35 per square foot nationally, and Thumbtack puts wooden patio covers at $4,500 to $14,000. Gable roofs, heavy timber and matching tile cost more. We give you a written price after measuring.
Can I build a wood patio cover in a fire hazard zone?
Often yes, but not with ordinary lumber and paint. Los Angeles County's rules call for ignition-resistant or noncombustible construction near the house; heavy timber sizes and fire-retardant-treated wood are recognized options. We check your parcel's requirements first.
Can I add roofing over my shade bar cover later?
Not under the city's shade bar standard, which says the bars may not be covered with additional roofing. A solid roof adds weight and wind load, so it needs framing and footings designed for a roofed cover.
How long does a wood patio cover last?
It depends mostly on upkeep. Covers that are kept painted or stained, with sound posts and flashing at the house, last for decades. Covers left bare in the valley sun dry, crack and rot at the post bases much sooner.
Wood or aluminum: which is cheaper?
In Fixr's figures the per-square-foot ranges overlap: wood $15 to $35, aluminum $20 to $70. Wood usually costs more over time because of repainting, while custom wood designs and fire zone timber can raise the upfront price.
Pergolas Questions
How much does a pergola cost?
HomeGuide's 2026 figures put a professionally installed 12x12 prefab pergola at $1,450 to $5,750 and a custom wood one at $4,300 to $9,350. Fixr lists a typical pergola at $1,900 to $6,500. Size, material and the shade top drive the price.
What is the difference between a pergola and a patio cover?
A pergola has an open top of beams and rafters that gives partial shade; a patio cover usually has a solid, insulated or lattice roof that gives fuller shade and, if solid, keeps rain off. Pergolas are more often freestanding.
Do I need a permit for a pergola in Santa Clarita?
Pergolas are accessory structures and generally follow the same setback and permit process as patio covers. We confirm with the city or Los Angeles County for your address and handle the permit when one is needed.
Which pergola material lasts longest in the valley sun?
Aluminum and vinyl hold up best with the least upkeep. Cedar and redwood look great but need regular sealing to avoid drying and cracking in Santa Clarita's dry heat.
Can I add a roof to my pergola later?
Usually, if the posts and footings were sized for it. A louvered or solid roof adds weight and wind load, so tell us at the start if you might add one.
Louvered Roof Systems Questions
How much does a louvered roof cost?
HomeGuide's 2026 figures put installed louvered roofs at $45 to $110 per square foot for manual systems and $55 to $125 for motorized ones, up to $175 with smart controls. Fixr lists a louvered cover over a 12x18 patio at $6,048 to $26,100 total.
Do louvered roofs keep out rain?
When closed, the blades overlap and send water into gutters in the frame, then down through the posts or downspouts. They keep a patio dry in normal rain; wind-driven rain can still blow in from the open sides.
Are motorized louvers worth the extra cost?
If you plan to adjust the roof often, yes; motors make it easy and allow rain and wind sensors. If you will mostly leave it in one position by season, a manual system costs less and has no electrical work.
What happens to a louvered roof in Santa Ana winds?
A properly engineered system is built for wind, and some brands, such as StruXure, offer sensors that can be programmed to open the blades in high wind to prevent uplift. Posts and footings still have to be sized correctly, which is part of our design.
Do louvered roofs need a permit in Santa Clarita?
They are roofed patio structures, so expect a building permit with footing, framing and final inspections. Motorized systems also need electrical work. We prepare the drawings and handle the permit.
Lattice & Shade Covers Questions
How much shade does a lattice cover give?
It depends on spacing and direction. Alumawood rates its aluminum lattice at reducing sun exposure by 40 to 60 percent. Tighter spacing and north-south orientation block more afternoon sun.
How much does a lattice patio cover cost?
Fixr lists lattice at about $5 to $38 per square foot, Thumbtack at $1,400 to $6,000 per project, and Bob Vila at $2,000 to $4,500. Aluminum usually costs more than wood upfront but needs no painting.
Can I put a solid roof over my lattice cover later?
With some aluminum systems, yes, if the frame was sized for it. The city's wood shade bar standard does not allow covering shade bars with roofing, so a wood lattice cover would need to be rebuilt for a solid roof.
Are shade sails a good idea in Santa Clarita?
They work well for pool decks and play areas, but they catch wind, so they should be loosened or taken down during strong Santa Ana winds. In fire zones we keep fabric away from the house.
Does a lattice cover keep rain off?
No. Lattice and shade bars filter sun but let rain through. If you want a dry patio, a solid, insulated or louvered roof is the better choice, at least over part of the space.
Patio Cover Repair & Replacement Questions
How do I know if my patio cover needs to be replaced?
Rot in the ledger and several rafters, a beam that sags visibly between posts, posts that lean or are rotted through, or a cover pulling away from the house all point toward replacement. If the damage is limited to a few posts or panels, repair is usually enough.
Why is my patio cover sagging?
Common causes are a beam too small for its span, rotted posts sinking at the base, a loose ledger, or roofing added to a cover built as open shade bars. We find the cause before recommending a fix.
Can you repair a wind-damaged aluminum cover?
Usually. Bent or lifted panels can be replaced and connections re-fastened. If posts or beams are bent, those parts are replaced, and we check the footings and house attachment while we are there.
Should I replace my old wood cover with aluminum?
Some owners do, to stop repainting and to meet fire zone rules for structures near the house. Aluminum is noncombustible. If you love the look of wood, heavy timber or treated lumber may be an option; we check what your parcel allows.
Do patio cover repairs need a permit?
It depends on the scope. Replacing the structure, changing its size or adding a solid roof generally needs a permit; small fixes may not. We confirm with the city or county which applies to your project.
