Shade You Can Adjust

Louvered roof systems replace a fixed roof with rows of aluminum blades that rotate. Tilted open, they let in light and let hot air rise out; closed, they overlap to block the sun and channel rain into gutters built into the frame. In Santa Clarita, where the same patio can be pleasant in March and scorching in August, that adjustability is the main reason people choose them over a fixed patio cover.

Manual or motorized

Manual systems use a crank or lever to rotate the blades. Motorized systems use a motor in the frame and a remote, wall switch or phone app, and many can add rain or wind sensors. StruXure, for example, says its optional smart sensors can be programmed to open the louvers automatically during high-wind events to prevent uplift. Motorized systems need a dedicated electrical circuit, which we plan for during design.

Built from aluminum

Most louvered systems are extruded aluminum with a powder-coat finish. StruXure, for example, lists 6063-T6 extruded aluminum, stainless steel fasteners and an AAMA 2604 powder coat, and offers a transferable limited lifetime warranty on its systems. Warranty terms vary by brand and product, so we give you the manufacturer's written warranty with the quote. Because the frame and blades are aluminum, these systems meet the noncombustible requirement Los Angeles County applies to patio covers near the house in fire hazard zones.

Heat and airflow

With summer highs averaging 90 to 95 degrees and heat waves past 110, a solid roof can trap heat underneath on still afternoons. Louvers solve that: tilt the blades partly open and warm air escapes while most direct sun is still blocked. In winter, open them fully to let the low sun warm the patio and the rooms behind it.

Wind and structure

A louvered roof is heavier than a lattice cover and has to resist uplift when the blades are closed. Santa Ana winds often top 40 miles per hour and can be much stronger through Newhall Pass and the canyons. We set posts on engineered footings, follow the manufacturer's span and post-spacing tables, and recommend opening the blades during wind events when the system allows it. Larger spans or attached systems usually need engineered plans for the permit.

Add-ons

Louvered systems are built to take accessories: LED lighting in the beams, ceiling fans, heaters, and drop-down screens on the sides for low afternoon sun or insects. The City of Santa Clarita's roofed patio cover standard (revised 2008; we confirm the current version) allows partial enclosure only when the longer wall and one other wall stay at least 65 percent open, using insect screening or removable plastic up to 1/8 inch thick, so we plan screens around that rule.

How It Works

1. Site visit

We measure, check setbacks, power access and how the system would mount.

2. System selection

Manual or motorized, color, size and accessories go into a written quote.

3. Plans and permit

Manufacturer engineering and drawings go to the city or county.

4. Install

Footings, frame, louvers, gutters and wiring, then inspection and a walkthrough.

Louvered Roof Systems Questions

How much does a louvered roof cost?

HomeGuide's 2026 figures put installed louvered roofs at $45 to $110 per square foot for manual systems and $55 to $125 for motorized ones, up to $175 with smart controls. Fixr lists a louvered cover over a 12x18 patio at $6,048 to $26,100 total.

Do louvered roofs keep out rain?

When closed, the blades overlap and send water into gutters in the frame, then down through the posts or downspouts. They keep a patio dry in normal rain; wind-driven rain can still blow in from the open sides.

Are motorized louvers worth the extra cost?

If you plan to adjust the roof often, yes; motors make it easy and allow rain and wind sensors. If you will mostly leave it in one position by season, a manual system costs less and has no electrical work.

What happens to a louvered roof in Santa Ana winds?

A properly engineered system is built for wind, and some brands, such as StruXure, offer sensors that can be programmed to open the blades in high wind to prevent uplift. Posts and footings still have to be sized correctly, which is part of our design.

Do louvered roofs need a permit in Santa Clarita?

They are roofed patio structures, so expect a building permit with footing, framing and final inspections. Motorized systems also need electrical work. We prepare the drawings and handle the permit.
