Patio Shade Where the Valley Meets the San Gabriels
Patio Covers in Sylmar have to handle two things most of the Valley does not: real wind and real fire exposure. This is the northern edge of the City of Los Angeles, where the ground climbs from a little over 1,100 feet near San Fernando Road to more than 1,700 feet at Hubbard Street, and homes near the San Gabriel Mountains sit on graded terraces. We build covers here with that setting in mind, from the materials we suggest to the way the roof is tied down.
Fire history that shapes material choice
Sylmar was the starting point of what the Los Angeles Times called the worst loss of homes due to fire in the city of Los Angeles. The Sayre Fire started on Sayre Street on November 14, 2008, pushed by Santa Ana gusts estimated between 50 and 80 mph, and burned 489 residences, most of them in the Oakridge mobile home park. In October 2019 the Saddleridge Fire started near Interstate 210 and Yarnell Street, and wind carried embers roughly 800 meters ahead of the main fire line, across Interstate 5.
That ember behavior is why we steer Sylmar owners away from untreated wood lattice and open-grain softwood shade bars on attached covers. Aluminum framing, noncombustible or ignition-resistant materials, and Class A roof panels are the practical choices for a structure that touches the house. Paints and coatings are not treated as fire protection, so a wood cover painted with a fire-retardant product is not the same as a cover built from the right materials. The state's updated local fire hazard maps were released in phases ending March 24, 2025, and we check your parcel before design.
Wind on the terraces
A cover on a foothill terrace catches more uplift than one tucked into a flat lot. We size footings and post connections for exposure, fasten the ledger into framing, and favor solid or insulated panels that are secured along every rafter over loose panels that can lift and rattle. For adjustable shade, a louvered system is another option; manufacturers generally advise opening the blades in high wind, and some models do it automatically with sensors.
Horse properties and large lots
A 1971 city plan aimed to keep Sylmar a place of houses, horses and orchards, and owners here still ride trails into the San Gabriel Mountains. On larger lots we build:
- Freestanding aluminum covers for shaded tack-up and grooming areas near the house
- Pergolas and shade structures over outdoor dining away from the stable
- Lattice covers along a side yard where some airflow matters
- Repairs to older wood covers that have weathered decades of sun
Patio covers are for outdoor living; a structure meant to house animals or store hay is a different building and needs its own review.
Heat and rain timing
Sylmar's average daily high in August is 93°F, and the wettest months are January through March, with almost no rain in July. Shade matters from late spring into fall, while a cover's gutters and slope only get tested in winter storms. We pitch roofs and place downspouts so water drains away from slabs and terraced slopes.
Permits
Sylmar is a City of Los Angeles neighborhood, so patio cover permits are issued by the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety. We confirm current requirements for your lot, prepare the plot plan, and include inspections in the schedule.

Sylmar at a Glance
- Olive grove origins. Up to 1,700 acres were planted with olive trees in 1894, and by 1906 the property had become the largest olive grove in the world. In 1922 parts were divided into tracts of 1 to 15 acres.
- Homes on graded slopes. Land rises from just over 1,100 feet near San Fernando Road to over 1,700 feet at Hubbard Street, and near the San Gabriel Mountains homes sit on man-made terraces.
- Sayre Fire, 2008. Fueled by Santa Ana gusts estimated at 50 to 80 mph, the Sayre Fire burned 489 residences, including 480 of the 600 mobile homes in the Oakridge park, and destroyed more than 600 structures in all.
- Ember spread in 2019. During the Saddleridge Fire, which burned about 8,799 acres starting October 10, 2019, wind carried embers about 800 meters west of the main fireline and across Interstate 5.
- Mostly owner households. Owners occupied 70.8% of Sylmar housing in 2000, with an average household size of 3.6 people, so many patios serve big families.

Sylmar Questions
Is a wood patio cover a bad idea in Sylmar?
Not always, but near the foothills an attached cover is part of the house's fire exposure. Aluminum or other noncombustible framing with a Class A roof is the safer choice there. On flatter lots farther from brush, a well-built wood cover can still work. We look at your location and the fire map before recommending either.
Can a fire-retardant paint make my wood cover fire-safe?
Los Angeles County's fire-zone construction notes say paints, stains and coatings are not an approved method of protection, and we confirm what LADBS requires for your lot. The material itself has to be noncombustible or ignition-resistant where that is required.
Can you build shade near my horse corral?
We build freestanding shade structures and covers for outdoor living areas on horse properties, such as a grooming or seating area. A building for keeping animals or storing feed is a different type of structure, so we would discuss its permit path with you separately.
How do you deal with Santa Ana winds on a hillside lot?
We size footings and connections for the exposure, secure every roof panel, and can suggest a louvered roof whose blades can be opened in high wind. On terraced lots we also plan drainage so roof water does not run onto the slope.
